To the grandmothers, mothers, sisters, aunts, long time friends, mothers of our children, lovers and exes. Here is to you, cheers!

To the grandmothers, here is to you, cheers! RIP Wawa.

Wawa is Taita for grandmother.

You were here before we were even conceived or our names thought of, you gave birth to our mothers and their sisters, our aunts. It is because of your unflinching wisdom in the ways of discipline and child upbringing that we had our behinds flogged mercilessly but with love.

It is because of you that we knew about God through the teachings you passed down to our mothers. You are the one who strengthened my mother’s resolve when she was turned to a single parent.

It was you Wawa, who taught us to love one another, my siblings and I. You taught me how to catch a chicken and kill it, even before I was in standard 5. An skill that proved useful all those days when no one else could do so and the family wanted to eat chicken.

You nurtured my love for farming, gave me a portion to farm and encouraged my love for food that is reared from the ground. Made my love for chicken grow from eating them to rearing them.

You showed us that love is what makes a home, a home. You entertained us and always had open arms for any one of use.

This paragraphs are not enough to celebrate your life and the impact you had on us, but you taught me to give. You taught me to share. You taught me to take responsibility and above all, you taught me how to pray.

Seeing the things you went through and still find a way to create humor out of those incidences, I do not know how you did it.

Wawa, this one is for you!

To our mothers, you who brought us to this world and have never stopped caring for us since! I love you mama.

I do not know where to begin, but in simple terms, life would have been very different without you.

I doubt I would know what to do, all these years. Through rebellion, mischief, battles won and battles lost, your love is unflinching and your compassion renewing.

I write this not knowing how to say thank you, but mama, know that you are the greatest.

Through tears and laughter, grim days and bright days, days when we lacked and days when we had more than enough. You are a star. You are a queen, mama. God bless you.

Even when we had no hope, you bore the burden alone. Even single and heartbroken you put our needs first.

You taught me responsibility and trusted me with it. I earned my love for cooking from you. And even though we have never had many cooking classes, just watching you cook with so much love and passion, was enough to make me want to be a chef when growing up. Now, every time I cook a great meal and my friends smile with satisfaction, I know that I cannot take all the credit.

You taught me grit, early mornings, late nights studying. You were my greatest fan and my greatest coach. Yet, you never failed to give me that bitter dose of reality that I always needed.

Now, as an adult, you are teaching me how to be a father. And I do not know what I would have done so far, had it not been for you.

May God give you a long and healthy life, that you may see the glory of God and his blessings keep pouring in our lives. May he give you peace, love and joy, always and may you always find comfort in Him.

Chawucha mao! — Thank you mama!

To the mother of my child. You have given me a gift I could never repay you for. I try every day, with every line of code that I write to do right by you. That the two of you may never lack.

I do not know about marriage, but I am not worried, one bit, about your love for our son.

I am proud of you. You have persevered through pain I am not sure I could handle. You found ways to make things happen even though you were pregnant, stressed and burdened with shame and fear for the future.

I want you to know this, God got you! God got you and the little boy, raise him right, that I may pale in comparison to the man that he will become. May God’s favor always be upon you and my son.

Be patient in all that is going on. What you do, I wouldn’t know where to begin.

Thank you for the beautiful baby boy

I will do my best as a father and if I fail… I cannot comprehend what that would do to me.

Dear sister,

You have grown into a fine young woman. I am always proud to call you my little sister. And even though we had our squabbles when we were younger, growing up siblings, there was always love.

You are work, hard. You fight for what you believe in and you never take bullshit.

I got lots of love for you.

Make it in this life. May you know joy, peace, love, laughter, good health and abundance of the finer things in life.

The man that will win your heart, will know it was not easy but it was worth it. You are a smart girl.

This one is for you.

Hello lover,

Wherever you are, wherever it is you are reading this from, I love you. You are a beacon of hope, an everlasting light of joy and love.

I do not comprehend, this life with your absence. You are truly magnificent.

You tell entertaining tales and laugh to the silliest of my jokes, you give me second chances.

You have an ambition second to none and you know how to get it.

Your independence and grit, is inspiring.

You have taught me many things. Amidst all those lessons, you have taught me the secret. Thank you for these lessons and many more.

May you know and experience happiness beyond the loudest laughter we have ever shared together. May you dreams come true. May God grant you and your family what you pray for.

Old time friend,

We talk, from time to time. You did not friend-zone me, I did not friend-zone you. It was just right, having you as a friend and being your friend.

We have been through a lot. Many drama, exes, laughter and times apart.

I wanna buy you a couple of beers next time we meet. And we will walk in the streets lit, rocking some dope sunglasses and confuse those we meet with our boss strides as we sip whatever it is we will have gotten to drinking at that point as we reminisce when we were broke and young.

We had good times.

May you know true love, and may your husband be the best in a man.

To the girls that broke my heart, never called back, cheated on me, made me question my masculinity or were straight down horrible women, I know there is a light in you. To my first love, I hope you are alright.

To the girls to whom I might have seemed a creep or a delusional monkey high on mind numbing drugs that give someone the conversational skills of a vacuum cleaner, here is to you.

Our encounters, some of them, might not have been without a bit of a cringe and are now marinated with some seasoning of hate or just pure oblivion.

May you forget me, clearly, I was not the one for you.

If we meet again, if I will have forgotten you or you me, such is life, why hold on to the past?

Lessons were learned, that was that.

To the friends that are still coming into my life and the friends that already here, I hope we have fun times together exploring life. I do not know you yet, but, whoever you are, be unapologetically authentic!

To the girls I do not know of, grandmothers, sisters and mothers, wives and lovers, friends and frienemies, exes.

Life on God’s green earth would not be the same without you.

A woman is the embodiment of strength, grit, wisdom and insight, love, compassion and everything sane. Life itself celebrates you everyday, and lady, whoever you are, celebrate yourself, I know me and many more out there celebrate and are grateful to know you one way or another.

This one is for you, Happy women’s day!!!!
